Stoke City 2 Tottenham Hotspur 1 – FA Cup 3rd Round Replay

Stoke-on-Trent is a city in Staffordshire. the city is a federation of six older towns (Hanley, Stoke, Burslem, Tunstall, Longton and Fenton) forming a linear city almost twelve miles long with an area of 36 square miles. Stoke-on-Trent is considered to the home of the pottery industry in the United Kingdom and is commonly known as The Potteries. It grew from the six towns and several villages to become a unified city in the early 20th Century.

This was my first match outside London. Following a 1-1 draw at White Hart Lane, the replay had been scheduled for the following Wednesday at the Victoria Ground. However, severe wind conditions on the day resulting in the roof the Butler Street Stand being blown off, caused the match to be postponed. Stoke City’s next home fixture had to be played at neighbouring Port Vale and the Cup replay was rearranged for the day of the 4th Round.

By chance someone at school said that his Dad worked with a Spurs fan who drove to some of the away matches in a Dormobile. Accordingly it was arranged that I and another would get a lift to the Potteries.

This being the FA Cup, Spurs fans were out in force amongst the 29,751 crowd (we do seem to have a lot of supporters that do not bother with other fixtures - Ed), which was higher than that for the first match. A Steve Perryman goal was although that Spurs could muster and, as was often the case in the Seventies, another 3rd round FA Cup exit was confirmed.
