Aston is an area within the city of Birmingham, in the West Midlands of England. Commencing immediately the north-east of the city centre. Aston was first mentioned in the Doomsday Book in 1086 as "Estone", having a mill, a priest and therefore probably a church, woodland and ploughland. Much of Aston consists of terraced houses that were built around the end of the 19th century and the beginning of the 20th century. Some of these houses were demolished in the late 1960s to make way for the Aston Expressway, which links Birmingham city centre to the M6 motorway. Aston Hall is a Grade I listed Jacobean house designed by John Thorpe and built between 1618 and 1635. In 1864 the house was bought by Birmingham Corporation, becoming the first historic country house to pass into municipal ownership, and is still owned by Birmingham City Council. It is now a community museum managed by the Birmingham Museums Trust. All the original members of the heavy metal band Black Sabbath were born and raised in the Aston area: Ozzy Osbourne, Tony Iommi, Bill Ward and Geezer Butler.
Aston Villa Football Club was founded in 1874 by members of the Villa Cross Wesleyan Chapel in Handsworth, which is now part of Birmingham. The four founders of Aston Villa were Jack Hughes, Frederick Matthews, Walter Price and William Scattergood. Aston Villa's first match was against the local Aston Brook St Mary's Rugby team. As a condition of the match, the Villa side had to agree to play the first half under rugby rules and the second half under football rules. The club has played at their current home ground, Villa Park, since 1897. Aston Villa was a founder member of The Football League in 1888. The club colours are claret shirts with sky blue sleeves, white shorts with claret and blue trim, and sky blue socks with claret and white trim. They were the original wearers of the claret and blue. A number of television programmes have included references to Aston Villa over the past few decades. In the sitcom Porridge, the character Lennie Godber is a Villa supporter. When filming began on Dad's Army, Villa fan Ian Lavender was allowed to choose Frank Pike's scarf from an array in the BBC wardrobe; he chose a claret and blue one—Aston Villa's colours.
This Pieman made his first trip to Villa Park by Football Special train from London Euston to Witton (less than five minutes walk from the ground). With 12 minutes of the match remaining, Tottenham Hotspur were trailing 2-0. However, a remarkable turnaround saw three goals for the North London side in the remaining time for them to win the match.
