Charlton Athletic FC

Charlton Athletic 4 Tottenham Hotspur 1 - Football League Division Two

Within the London Borough of Greenwich, Charlton is an area in south-east London located between Greenwich and Woolwich. The core of the area is The Village, which is on a hillside overlooking the River Thames. Suburban sprawl has led to the name being applied to a large area reaching down to the south bank of the river, roughly where the Thames Barrier crosses the river, although the barrier itself is located at Woolwich Reach. At one time, Charlton enjoyed a somewhat sordid reputation. In the 1720s, it was described by Daniel Defoe: "Charleton, a village famous, or rather infamous for the yearly collected rabble of mad-people, at Horn-Fair; the rudeness of which I cannot but think, is such as ought to be suppressed, and indeed in a civiliz'd well govern'd nation, it may well be said to be unsufferable. The mob indeed at that time take all kinds of liberties, and the women are especially impudent for that day; as if it was a day that justify'd the giving themselves a loose to all manner of indecency and immodesty, without any reproach, or without suffering the censure which such behaviour would deserve at another time."

Spurs had already suffered a defeat a week or so earlier at Hull City, but had bounced back with a resounding home victory against Oldham Athletic. However any misguided belief that a return to the top flight was going to be a formality, was soon dispelled at The Valley.

We had travelled to Charlton Station via London Bridge and from there it is only a few hundred yards to the stadium. We took our place on the terracing which held a good mixture of home, away and a not so good sprinkling of Millwall fans that afternoon.

The 30,706 crowd were treated to an exciting match, Spurs were playing OK but were upstaged by a fighting Charlton performance, highlighted by a hat-trick from former Tottenham man Mike Flanagan. Peter Taylor's goal was a mere consolation for the thousands of Spurs fans crossing the Thames.

The very match from 1977
