Crystal Palace FC

Crystal Palace 1 Tottenham Hotspur 2 - Football League Division Two

The Crystal Palace was a wrought iron and glass building originally erected in Hyde Park to house the Great Exhibition of 1851. More than 14,000 exhibitors from around the world gathered in the Palace's 990,000 square feet of exhibition space to display examples of the latest technology developed in the Industrial Revolution. Designed by Joseph Paxton, the Great Exhibition building was 1,850 feet (564 m) long, with an interior height of 408 feet (124 m). After the exhibition, the building was moved to a new park in a high, healthy and wealthy area of London called Sydenham Hill, an area not much changed today from the well-heeled suburb full of large Victorian villas that it was during its Victorian heyday.

The Crystal Palace was enlarged and stood from 1854 until 1936, when it was destroyed by fire. It attracted many thousands of visitors from all levels of society. The name Crystal Palace (coined by the satirical magazine Punch) was later used to denote this area of south London and the park that surrounds the site, home of the Crystal Palace National Sports Centre.

Crystal Palace FC was formed in 1905 by workers at the Crystal Palace, and celebrated its centenary in 2005. Originally known as "The Glaziers" - a reference to their original home in the shadow of Joseph Paxton's enormous glass exhibition hall. The club purchased Selhurst Park in 1922. The site, a former brickfield, was bought from the Brighton Railway Company for £2,570. The stadium (designed by Archibald Leitch) was constructed by a Mr Humphreys for around £30,000, and was officially opened by the Lord Mayor of London on 30 August 1924.

I recall travelling from Harlow via Liverpool Street and London Bridge to Norwood Junction for this my first visit to Selhurst Park. Having been relegated from the top flight, this season in the 2nd Division gave younger fans such as myself, the opportunity to travel to new grounds. I was not alone as a bumper 40,522 crowd witnessed a 2-1 victory for Spurs, courtesy of goals from strikers Ian Moores and John Duncan.
